Brian Reed
In this body of work, Brian Reed seeks to construct a play between semiotics, typography and the formal aesthetics of word structures where the word becomes the image and object in its own right.
They are superficially concerned with ephemeral consumerist ideals, the pieces as a whole delve behind this to suggest a somewhat apologetic yearning for the Modernist ideology, recoding it with the underlining detriment of doublespeak from the political and corporate worlds, the phrases are deliberately ambiguous and their true meaning obscured.
This dichotomy is formally played out in the artist’s self-conscious attention to detail and craft despite the use of cheap and glossy household materials.
He has exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe, and has work in the collections of the Nicholas Logsdail [Lisson Gallery], University of the Arts London as well as various private collections.
